TROY, Ala. – The lights are off, the dust has settled, and the Trojan Stampede has come to an end at the Pike County Cattleman's Association Facility.
After three longs nights of collegiate rodeo action, the Troy rodeo team has completed its fall season and will now get ready for the spring season starting in February.
Troy sent eight competitors to the final short-go round and came away with some positive results. The highlight of the night came from Freshman Josey Owens who won tonight's final round in Barrel Racing.
“Josey Owens has been making it back a little bit in each short go in the past 2 rodeos and she really came out strong for us with a win in barrel racing,” said head coach Josh Simmons. Owens posted a time of 16.26 seconds to win tonight's final round, and also placed her second in the average time for the weekend. Senior teammate Brittany Drawdy, who sits third in the region in points, posted a total time of 33.61 seconds.
Sophomores Kassandra Smith and Lanie Culligan placed third and fourth respectively in Goat Tying, which is something Simmons is proud of.
“Kassandra and Lanie stepped it up in the goat tying. Lanie had a great run and so did Kassandra, they put some points on the board for the team,” said Simmons. Smith was the short-go winner tonight, with a time of 8.9 seconds, while Culligan finished tied for fourth in tonight's round.
Smith also competed in Breakaway Roping, but failed to post a time and didn't place in the final average.
The men's highest finish of the night came from the Team Roping duo of Lane Taylor and Nelson Wyatt. The duos first round score put them in second place going into tonight's short-go, but they broke the barrier which added a ten second penalty to the total time. The two cowboys finished the weekend with a total time of 25.7 seconds and finished in fourth.
Cody Skelton posted a short-go time of 12.7 seconds in Calf Roping which landed him in fifth for the weekend average. Ten bull riders closed out tonight's action, but no cowboy was able to make the full eight seconds, including Troy's Justin Walker.
After a long three days and fall season, Simmons is proud of his team.
“The competition was really tough this weekend, but the team did great and they had a good time. Everybody loves the home rodeo because their family comes and supports them in their only home event of the year.
The team will have a long break and pick back up with rodeo action beginning in February.
