11/17/2011 11:24:00 PM | Rodeo
TROY, Ala. -- The Troy University rodeo teams opened their only home event of the year this evening at the Pike County Cattleman's Association Facility. Tonight was the first night of the Trojan Stampede which will continue over the next two nights.
Troy welcomed colleges and universities from all over the country. Teams from East Mississippi Community College, Murray State University, Missouri Valley College, Three Rivers College, University of Tennessee-Martin, University of Arkansas-Monticello, Southern Arkansas University, University of West Alabama, North Arkansas Community College, Arkansas State University, Mississippi State University, and Northwest Mississippi Community College are all in Troy for the event.
Nine Trojans competed in tonight's action and posted some well rounded results.
Nelson Wyatt placed seventh in the Calf Roping event with a time of 20.1 seconds. The only other male to compete was Justin Walker where he competed in Bull Riding but didn't post a score.
The women's team had some stand outs in tonight's action. Liza Ingram posted a time of 4.3 seconds in Breakaway Roping for a second place finish. Freshman Josey Owens competed in Breakaway but didn't post a score.
Whitney Hazouri was the highest Trojan finisher in Goat Tying with a time of 11.7 seconds, good enough for fourth place. Owens also competed and posted a time of 13 seconds tied for fifth, while Kendyll Rushing didn't post a time.
Troy's lone first place finish of the night came in the Barrel Racing event. Owens weaved her way around the three barrels for a time of 16.91 seconds, fast enough for a victory. Kenzie Dixon finished in fifth place with a time of 17.56 seconds, while teammates Cassidy Aldridge and Robin Waters came in sixth and ninth respectively, due to five second penalties.
The “slack” portion of the rodeo began after public performances tonight and will continue tomorrow morning. Check back at TroyTrojans.com tomorrow night for those results, as well as results from tomorrow night's competition.
