2011 USTA Tennic Classic of Troy Entrants | Tournament Notes
The USTA Tennis Classic will return to Troy the week of October 10 and the player list has been revealed for the ninth annual event. The event will once again be held at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on the Troy University campus.
“This event is a part of the United States Tennis Association pro circuit which, of course, has its highest level at the U.S. Open,” Trojans tennis coach Eric Hayes, who serves as the primary local promoter for the event, said. “We are the smallest market at the $50,000 level. Last week they were in Las Vegas and this week they are in Kansas City.”
Hayes said the event is important to many of the players on the tour because of its timing, which comes late in the season.
“This tournament is so important because it is one of the last events to earn points before the Australian Open,” Hayes said. “The cutoff for the Australian Open is in just a couple of weeks, so the points the players earn here in Troy have a direct impact on their entrance into that major.”
A few of the key players coming to Troy this year include Romina Oprandi, Mirjana Lucic, Edina Gallouits-Hall and former champion Ahsha Rolle.
“This year the event will feature two players ranked in the top 100 in the world, including one who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open two or three years ago,” Hayes said. “The UTSA holds four wildcard spots, and those are usually filled by the top U.S. Junior players. One of those is Grace Min (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who just won the U.S. Junior Championship and is ranked number one in the world in the junior rankings.”
Oprandi is 25-years-old and an Italian national who is currently ranked No. 92 in the world. She has a career record of 231-109 in singles competition and holds 17 ITF titles, with a record of 88-55 and 10 ITF titles in doubles.
Lucic is 29-years-old and a Croatian national. Her current world ranking is 109. Lucic has a career singles record of 184-137 and holds two WTA titles as well as three ITF titles, with a record of 31-25 and two WTA titles and one ITF title in doubles.
Gallovits-Hall is 26-years-old and a Romanian national. Her current world ranking is 124. She has a career record of 334-205 in singles with 17 ITF titles, as well as a doubles career record of 136-114 with three WTA titles and nine ITF titles.
Rolle is 26-years-old and a native of Miami Shores, Fla. She is a previous winner of the Troy Tennis Classic (2006). Rolle is currently ranked 252nd in the world with a career record of 143-121 in singles and a doubles record of 82-82.
Hayes said USTA Tennis Classic of Troy is an event the entire community has come to embrace.
“The community enjoys this event because a lot of the players get housing from local families,” Hayes said. “They get to know the kids. Of the top 100 players in the world right now, there are probably 15 or 16 who have played in Troy in the past. Now they are on ESPN and playing in the grand slam tournaments, so it is fun for the people here who got to know them to keep up with them through the year.”
The USTA Tennis Classic of Troy will begin with the Qualifying Round on Sunday, October 9, at 10 a.m. The tournament's main draw will begin on Tuesday, October 11, at 10 a.m.
The Doubles Championship will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 10 a.m. and the singles Championship with be held Sunday, October 16, at 1 p.m.
