TROY, Ala. – Both the Troy University men's and women's tennis teams made a strong showing at last weekend's USTA/ITA Regional Championships, with a few individuals turning in superb performances.
The women's team traveled to Samford for the four-day event where Karoline Grymel stole the show. The Hamburg, Germany rebounded after dropping her first round singles match in the main draw to make some noise in the consolation draw.
Grymel, who fell to Emma Levy of Tulane in the main draw, ripped through four opponents on her way to the consolation final. Grymel first knocked off Khrystyna Pavlyuk of Mississippi State, setting up a match-up with Erin Wilbert of Louisiana-Lafayette, who Grymel handled in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Grymel then took care of Emma Helisten of Tulane in quarterfinals, setting up a semifinal match with Plamena Kurteva of Auburn. Grymel took the first set, 7-6, but fell in set two, 6-2. She overcame the loss of momentum to take the final set, 10-5 and set up a date in the finals with Emily Zabor of Alabama.
Unfortunately, the final match was scheduled to be played on Monday, but due to class conflicts was not played. Overall on the weekend, Grymel posted a 4-1 record and finished as a finalist in the consolation singles draw.
She wasn't the only Trojan being noticed last weekend as Anas Rouchdi made a nice run through the main singles draw at the Men's USTA/ITA Regional Championship that was played in Auburn.
Rouchdi was the top performer for the men at the four-day event as he advanced to the third round of main singles draw. In the first round, he took care of Elliott Barnwell of Samford in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. That win set up a match with Cody Hall of South Alabama, who was seeded in the draw.
Rouchdi , however, did not back down as he knocked off Hall in straight sets as well, 6-2, 7-5. Another seeded competitor, James Chaudry of Mississippi State, was ultimately able to end Rouchdi's run in the third round. Chaudry went to win two more matches after knocking off Rouchdi.
The men will return to the court this weekend as they travel to Tampa, Fla., to take part in the USF Fall Invitational. Check back with TroyTrojans.com for results from that event as well all happenings in Troy Athletics.
