The Trojans lost their second conference match to FAU on the road on Sunday.
Boca Raton, Fla. – The Troy soccer team fell in only their second road conference match of the season to Florida Atlantic on Sunday.
Troy (7-5-1; 2-2) gained an early lead on the Owls. Forward Ruth Sutcliffe put the Trojans up 1-0 in just the 5' on an unassisted goal from about 15 yards out. The goal gives Sutcliffe her seventh of the season and ties her with newcomer Chelsey Williams for the team's leading scorer in a tight competition.
The Trojan defense maintained the lead into the second half.
In the second half FAU (5-5-1; 1-2-1) forward Jesse Shugg accepted a pass from teammates
Allison Griffin and Meagan Borger and attained the equalizing goal in the 74'. Troy unable to answer back would take the match into overtime.
In the 94' minute of overtime Shugg struck again this time finishing a cross from teammates Marisa Russo and Kara Mundelein to claim the game winning goal. The goal gave the Owls the 2-1 victory over the Trojans and their first conference victory of the season.
“We did not do what we needed to today and FAU found a way to win,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “Congratulations to FAU for earning a great result. We now need to regroup quickly for another challenging road trip next weekend.”
Troy's competitive conference schedule holds no exception for next week as they prepare to travel to North Texas to take on the Mean Green. Kickoff is set for 7 pm Friday in Denton, Texas.
