Trojans soccer falls 2-1 late in match to Arkansas State.
TROY, Ala. – Troy (8-8-1, 3-5) soccer suffered their first loss at home this season on Sunday against Arkansas State (6-8-2, 4-4). The Trojans who entered the match off of a 2-0 victory against Arkansas - Little Rock on Friday, needed a victory over the Red Wolves to break a three way tie in between the three teams in the Sun Belt standings.
It looked as if Troy would secure that lead in the first half when forward Chelsey Williams accepted a through pass from fellow forward Paige McMillan and turned it into a Trojan goal in the 32'. The goal would be Williams ninth of the season and it gives the freshman the leading scorer status for the team this season.
Headed into the second half and with a 1-0 lead the Trojans continued to pressure the Arkansas defense; however Troy struggled to complete their attacks as the suffered nine off side penalties.
“If we put away our chances, the game ends in our favor,” said head coach Chris Bentley.
Arkansas State managed to fight back with an attack of their own as midfielder Ashley Jackson rebounded an Arkansas State corner kick to record the game tying goal in the 78'. Only five minutes later the Red Wolves struck again, this time off of the leg of Jessica Jingbald who accepted a series of passes from teammates Christina Fink and Michele Clark to net the game winning goal in the 83'.
Arkansas State would go on to secure the 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Troy to break the three way tie in the Sun Belt standings.
“Hats off to Arkansas State, they kept fighting and found a way to win,” Bentley said.
Troy now prepares for their last regular season road match as they will be traveling to Bowling
Green, Kentucky on Thursday to take on Western Kentucky.
