Rodeo Teams Will Face Off With Their State Opponent
10/12/2011 1:20:00 PM | Rodeo
The Troy Rodeo team will face their only in state opponent this weekend when they travel to Livingston, AL to compete in the University of West Alabama Rodeo Showdown.
The Men's team will start the weekend ranked fifth, while the Women have taken first place with a demanding lead in the point's standings. West Alabama only had one athlete compete in the first rodeo at Missouri Valley College and they finished last. However, that doesn't mean it's going to be an easy weekend for Troy.
“UWA is our rival, kind of like Alabama and Auburn in football. They're one team we want to beat at every rodeo; I want to beat them all, but I dang sure want to put UWA under us,” Coach Josh Simmons said.
For the Women's team, the win at MVC was more than just a win in the standings. The ladies made a deal with Coach Simmons before leaving for Missouri.
“The girls and I made an agreement, and since the women's team won at MVC, I have to paint my fingernails black, except for my middle fingers; the team thinks they need to be red. I have to wear the paint during the rodeo so everybody can see,” Simmons said.
The men also have an extra incentive to win this weekend.
“If the men win, I have to get a Mohawk, so the guys want to get that real bad.”
Action will begin Thursday night at 7:30 at the Don C. Hines Rodeo Complex, and will continue through Saturday evening.
