Taylor Joins Weathers as League Honoree
SUN BELT WEEKLY RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS - Troy senior guard Vernon Taylor has been named this week's Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Taylor becomes the second consecutive Troy hoopster to earn the conference's player of the week honor. Taylor's teammate, Will Weathers, earned last week's award.
Troy entered the week with zero Sun Belt wins, but exited with two thanks to some outstanding play by Vernon Taylor. The second-leading scorer in the Sun Belt at 15.7 ppg, Taylor anchored the Trojans through victories over WKU and North Texas. The Cross, S.C. native, scored 20 points to lead the Trojans over the Hilltoppers, 82-68. He added seven rebounds and hit 6-of-6 free throws to ice the victory.
On Saturday against North Texas, Taylor turned it up again scoring 22 points as Troy earned an 89-81 win over Sun Belt Western Division favorite North Texas. The win over the Mean Green marked the first time this season the Trojans had earned victories in back-to-back games. The two 20-plus point games marked the 5th and 6th times that Taylor had reached that plateau this season. He has double-figures in all but three games this season and has led Troy in scoring on six occasions.
For the week, Taylor averaged 21.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg while shooting over 46 percent from the field. He also hit on 50 percent of his 3-point attempts and 88.3 percent of his free throws (15-of-18). Taylor ranks second in scoring (15.7 ppg) and 12th in rebounding (5.7 rpg) in the Sun Belt this season and is averaging 15.6 ppg and 6.4 rpg in five league games.
Troy is in action next on Thursday when it faces Middle Tennessee on Thursday in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
