Trojans Off To Best Conference Start With Victory Sunday Afternoon

Troy swept the state of Louisiana to start 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play for the first time in school history

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Troy University soccer team recorded their second consecutive road shutout to open conference play, and their fourth consecutive shutout, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Trojans (7-2-1) are off to their best conference schedule start in school history as they move to 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.

“Louisiana–Lafayette really showed a will to work which was incredible," said head coach Chris Bentley. "However, I'm really proud of girls for not breaking and playing the full game and eventually getting the game winning goal.”

The Trojans were able to record the victory on an impressive goal in the 85th minute by Ruth Sutcliffe, off an assist from #Rochelle Bohuslavicky#. This is the second consecutive match the two have teamed together to record the game winning goal in the final minutes of the match.

“Playing the entire match is something we've really been working on," Bentley said. "I am proud of the girl's mental focus and not panicking in the last few minutes of the game and it really showed today.”

The Trojan defense was also a true testament to the win as the Ragin' Cajuns' were able to get off 16 shots; however Trojan goalkeeper Ashley Branham and the rest of the Troy defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season. Branham recorded a total of seven saves in the match to help lead Troy to their fourth straight win.

Troy soccer will be back in action at home on Friday as they take on Florida International at 3 p.m. in the friendly confines of Troy Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home soccer matches, and the match can be seen on All-Access via TroyTrojans.com.
