TROY, Ala. – The Troy University Trojans soccer team fell to FIU, 2-0, Friday afternoon in their first conference loss of the season.
The Trojans (7-3-1, 2-1 Sun Belt) entered the match against the defending conference champions with high hopes as they began their conference play with two consecutive victories.
“We are disappointed with our overall performance,” said head coach Chris Bentley, "Not to take anything way from FIU, as they were the better team today. We just didn't play to our potential.”
Troy found themselves backed up early in the match as the FIU offense was able to retain possession of the ball from the Trojans for the majority of the match. Troy's defense stood strong in the midst of the Golden Panther's attack however fell short as they gave up their first goal in four matches to FIU striker Chelsea Leiva in the 16th minute. The goal came on the first shot allowed by the Trojans in the game.
“We were just being careless with our passing and FIU did a great job of pressing us,” Bentley said.
The Trojans did manage to find a few opportunities to answer the ensuing Panther offense however only recorded two shots in the match.
The Golden Panthers would find the back of the net once more in the 73rd minute off the foot of Kassandra Sorzano. The match would end with the panthers on top 2-0. This was the first match in eight matches that the Trojans have been denied a single goal.
“We now just have to get ready to come back and play against a good team Sunday,” said Bentley. “We have to put forth a better effort against FAU.”
Troy will be back on the pitch on Sunday at 12 noon as they take on Florida Atlantic at the Troy Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home soccer matches, and the matches will be available on All-Access via TroyTrojans.com.
