Box Score
TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team defeated Mississippi Valley State 5-0 Sunday, in their last match of non-conference play.
The Trojans (5-2-1) virtually dominated the entire match as they were able to possess the ball for the majority of play.
“We played very well as a team,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We were able to play many of our players and get everyone some game time experience.”
Troy found their first mark off of a header by Ruth Sutcliffe on a pass from Cecilia Thorgren in the 20th minute of the match. It would only take six minutes for the Trojans to strike again, only this time it was from Sutcliffe's foot as she knocked home a penalty kick.
Junior Mary Morris dribbled through the Delta Devil's defense to record goal three for the Trojans, just three minutes after the Trojan penalty kick. The junior leads the Trojans in goals this season as she has recorded six in just eight games.
"We have really good team chemistry which I think makes a big difference,” said Bentley. “All of our girls have dedicated themselves to our plan.”
The Trojans came out just as strong in the second half, as it only took Thorngren 90 seconds to find the goal yet again for the Trojans. Thorngren's goal came on a header off a pass by senior midfielder Jill Pinder.
Pinder, however was not done in the match. In the 49 minute with an assist from Sutcliffe, Pinder scored Troy's fifth and final goal of the match.
The goal, Pinder's 21st career goal gives her the record for the most career goals at Troy, while Sutcliffe is only one assist away from tying the single-season record for most assists at Troy.
The match would end with the Trojans on top 5-0 against the Delta Devils. The win now gives Troy a five game un-beaten streak since Austin Peay.
“We need to improve our speed of play and play our game,” Bentley said. "It's very important that we play for a full 90 minutes. We will use the upcoming week to work on our deficiencies and prepare ourselves for a very competitive conference schedule.”
The Trojans will travel down to ULM to take on the Warhawks September 24 to kick off their conference play.
