Box Score
MONROE, La. – The Troy University soccer kicked off their 2010 conference season Friday night on the road, defeating ULM 1-0.
The Trojans (6-2-1) entered the match hoping to build on an impressive non-conference schedule.
“We are really proud of the girls overall performance,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “They really fought through a lot of adversity tonight.”
The match was a testament to the tough battle that the Trojans expected out of the conference. Both teams seemed to be at a complete stalemate as they entered halftime at 0-0, with both teams recording almost the same number of shots. The competition would be a very physical one as both teams recorded 16 fouls a piece for the entire game.
“Louisiana Monroe is a very rough and tough company," Bentley said. "There were many fouls called in the game, which made it tough to break through."
Troy would finally get a bit of relief in the 82nd minute as sophomore Ruth Sutcliffe recorded the first and only goal of the match off an assist from freshman #Rochelle Bohuslavicky#. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Branham and the rest of the Trojan defense would earn their fourth shutout of the season in the victory.
“We are happy to get a good start in our conference schedule and are looking forward to Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday,” Bentley said.
The Trojans now prepare to take on Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday at 1 p.m. to continue their six game unbeaten streak.
