Trojans hit the road to take on in-state rival Friday night
TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team will get an opportunity to take on their in-state rival, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, when they hit the road Friday night for the in-state affair.
Troy (3-2-1) enters the match with the momentum of winning the Port City Classic soccer tournament last weekend. Despite winning the tournament the Trojan soccer team is hoping to improve from their last match against Sam Houston State which ended in a draw in double overtime.
"It has been a good week of training so far,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “The girls were happy with the outcome of the weekend, but the result Sunday left a bad taste in their mouths, and that has shown in their demeanor."
The Trojans came out of the tournament with a record of 1-0-1, which would be good enough to allow the Trojans to split the title of tournament champions with South Alabama. However, the Trojans were awarded the overall championship due to goal differential.
Troy will have their work cut out for them as they take on a Jacksonville State (2-5-1) squad who is coming off a rather impressive win against Southern (La.) University. However, the Trojans aren't letting the name of their opponent change the way they compete.
"Our preparation for Jacksonville State does not change,” said Bentley. “We have, and will, spend the majority of time in training focusing on what we need to improve for this coming week."
This will be the two teams first meeting since 2008, and the Trojans have struggled in the past against the Gamecocks as the two teams overall record is 1-7.
"Historically, Jacksonville State has been a very tough opponent for us, and we do not expect that to change,” Bentley said. “We need to be ready to play a complete game Friday. “
Troy will take on the Gamecocks at Jacksonville on Friday at 6 pm.
