The Troy University women's soccer team kicks off the highly-anticipated 2010 season on Friday at home against Wofford College, inside the friendly confines of the Troy Soccer Complex.
The Trojans have been building on a series of successful seasons under head coach Chris Bentley, who is entering his third season as the head coach, as they saw their 2009 season end in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. It was only the second time in school history that the program advanced to the postseason tournament, joining the 2005 team.
Troy will be using last season, along with a talented recruiting class and a successful pre-season as momentum to begin their new season off on the right foot.
"This has been one of the most productive preseason we have had,” Bentley said during his team's mid-week preparations. “We have had a high standard of training, and we continue to improve every day."
As part of the preseason, the Trojans faced Mercer on the road in an exhibition game, Although the score did not reflect the outcome they had hoped, the team still found confidence on the pitch in a strong second half performance.
"Training has been to the same standard as preseason since the exhibition,” Bentley said. “We have focused on some of the things we felt we lacked, and hope to not make the same mistakes again. In preparation for the first game, we tend to focus more on ourselves than the opposition. We have focused on all things based around our system of play, of course mixing fitness in along the way.”
The Wofford Terriers, on paper seem to be an even match for the Trojans as they return eight starters and 10 newcomers. However, that is the only thing the Trojans know about their season-opening opponent.
The Trojans welcome back seven starters including senior four-year starter Ceil Martinec along with fellow seniors Sydney Beasley, April Madden, Jill Pinder and Carley Zurfluh. Troy will also have 14 new faces stepping onto the pitch this season.
"Wofford is a little bit of an unknown,” Bentley said. “However, saying that, we are happy to have them on the schedule because they pose a new challenge that will better prepare us for conference games.”
The Troy women's soccer season kicks off Friday at the Trojan Soccer complex at 3 pm. The game can be viewed on the new All-Access provided by Troy University Athletics beginning prior to kickoff. Admission to all home soccer matches is free to the public.
