The Trojan women's soccer team will travel to Mercer University Thursday night to compete in an exhibition match to kick off their 2010 season.
“We feel good about what we have going into this match,” head coach Chris Bentley said. “We're healthy right now. We've had strong practices and now we're ready to get out and play a different team and see how it goes to get a good measure on where to go from here.”
The Trojans have had a strong pre-season thus far and hope to gain much needed experience as they go up against a slightly more seasoned team. Mercer returns 10 starters from the 2009 season.
This season Troy's soccer program welcomes 14 newcomers to go with 11 returning letter winners. The Trojans return seven starters. Bentley hopes to allow his newcomers a chance to find their mark on the pitch as well as allow the entire team an opportunity to play together against an opponent before the actual season begins.
“We have a bunch of positions open right now, especially in the midfield and up top,” Bentley said. “We're looking to see where players fit in. We have new players all over the place and we want to figure out where they can play. We're excited to get out there and see where we stand.”
The Trojans will take to the pitch at Mercer at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
