CASPER, Wyo. -- Troy University senior Stetson Aldridge made a big move up the leaderboard at the College National Finals Rodeo.
A native of Folkston, Ga., Aldridge posted a time of 9.0 second in the third round of the tie-down roping competition and stands second overall in the event heading into Saturday's championship round.
Aldridge jumped into the hunt for a national title with a three-round time of 31.6 seconds, just 1.3 seconds behind event leader Rob Webb of Weber State.
Freshman Lane Taylor, a native of Kinston, Ala., who is teamed with Brady Wilson of Missouri Valley College, still holds first place in the team roping competition. They hold a one second advantage over a tandem from Eastern New Mexico University.
Taylor and Wilson posted times of 12.4 seconds, 8.4 and 8.1 in their three runs.
Another team of Trojans, seniors Mark Gentry (Pelham, Ala.) and Clint Keller (Winston-Salem, NC), are tied for 45th after two rounds of competition, which included a no score in the second round after a first round time of 6.7 seconds. They will make their third run during tonight's performance and are scheduled to compete at around 8:30 p.m. (MT).
"Clint and Mark have a great chance to get to the finals if they post a good time tonight," Trojans coach Josh Simmons said. "If they can get to the finals then we will have a chance to make a lot of noise in the team competition."
Overall, the Trojans stand eighth as a team after four days with 250 points. Vernon College leads the men's team competition with 460 points.
"This is the best chance we have ever had to win," Simmons said. "We also have a chance to come home with two event championships."
Competition at the CNFR will continue with the final preliminary round performance tonight. The championship round is scheduled for Saturday night. All performances are set for 7 p.m. (MT).
Troy's only CNFR title came in the tie-down roping competition in 2007 when Ben Mayworth captured a national title.
