Although the Trojans fell in overtime, they secured their spot in the tournament with an Arkansas State loss
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Troy University soccer team fell to Sun Belt rivalry Middle Tennessee 1-0 in overtime on Sunday. Although the team lost, they secured their spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the second year in a row with an Arkansas State loss.
“We are very disappointed with our overall team performance today,” said head coach Chris Bentley. "Not to take away from Middle Tennessee, but we were very lethargic from kick off and we did not get any better as the match progressed.”
Sitting at the .500 mark with just one match remaining in the season, the Trojans can finish no worse than seventh place and can finish as high as fifth with a victory over South Alabama in the season finale. The tournament takes place November 3-6 in Bowling Green on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
In order for the Trojans to move as high as fifth in the standings, they will need a victory over South Alabama and a WKU loss to Middle Tennessee.
"We are excited about the opportunity to play in the tournament," Bentley said. "However, in saying that, we have to get our focus back on South Alabama and try to improve where we stand."
Troy (10-7-1, 5-5 Sun Belt) struggled offensively against the Blue Raiders, only recording three shots on the day. However they managed to keep hold of the match defensively despite giving up a total of 20 shots to Middle Tennessee.
Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Buono displayed a valiant effort in only her second collegiate start, as she recorded four saves. She allowed the only goal of the match in the 99th minute of the match to Blue Raider midfielder Vanessa Mueggler.
It was the second time this season the Trojans have gone to overtime.
Despite the disappointing loss the Trojans now turn their sights to their final regular season match against in-state rival South Alabama.
“We have a tough week of preparation ahead of us,” Bentley said. “We need to go into South Alabama wanting to win. They are a tough team and are always a challenging rivalry game.”
The Trojans travel to Mobile to take on the Jaguars on Friday at 7 pm.
