Trojans secure fifth seed in upcoming conference tournament
Box Score | Sun Belt Conference Tournament Bracket
MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team defeated in-state conference rival South Alabama Friday night in a 1-0 overtime victory, wrapping up the programs best-ever regular season record and securing the fifth seed ranking in the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
“South Alabama outplayed us tonight but we still managed to find a way to win,” said head coach Chris Bentley.
Troy (11-7-1, 6-5 Sun Belt) struggled offensively as they were only able to lay claim to five shots in regulation while South Alabama recorded 19 total shots on the match.
Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Buono recorded four saves, and her first shutout in only her third collegiate start as a Trojan.
Despite the hard luck on offense during regulation, it was the Trojans' veterans who would come through in overtime. In the 98th minute, senior Jill Pinder scored off of a corner kick from teammate Mary Morris to record the win.
“We're happy for the girls as this is the best record in school history," Bentley said. "But now it is all about preparing for the conference tournament.”
The Trojan victory coupled by a WKU loss to Middle Tennessee propeled the Trojans to the fifth seed going into the Sun Belt Conference tournament. It is the highest seed achieved in school history by Troy in Sun Belt play.
The fifth-seeded Trojans take on fourth-seeded FIU in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on November 3. The match will be played at 1 p.m. in Bowling Green, Ky., on the campus of WKU.
