LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Troy University Trojans soccer team defeated UALR 2-1 Friday night in Sun Belt Conference action.
The victory is the Trojans' first win in two matches and gives the team a much-needed boost as they fight for positioning in the Sun Belt standings.
“I was really happy with our effort today,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We found a way to win against a quality team in UALR. They really fought hard and it gave us some problems.”
Troy (9-5-1, 4-3 Sun Belt) came out early in the match as senior Jill Pinder scored off an assist by fellow veteran player Mary Morris in the eighth minute. The goal gave the Trojans the lead heading into halftime, with their first lead in the first half in four matches.
However, the Trojans of UALR answered Pinder's goal in the 61st minute off the foot of Taylor Gabbert.
Troy wasted little time in responding to the equalizing goal as sophomore forward Ruth Sutcliffe came through in the 77th minute to score the game-winner for Troy.
The win was much needed for Troy as they keep pace with the leaders in the Sun Belt Conference. Their sights now turn to conference foe Arkansas State who is on the heels of Troy in the conference standings.
“Now we just have to focus on recovery and get ready for a tough Arkansas State team on Sunday,” said Bentley.
