Troy finds itself in battle for tournament seeding as season nears end

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Troy University soccer team fell in its Sun Belt match against Arkansas State 2-1 on Sunday. The defeat is Troy's fourth conference loss this season and is a set back as they fight for a top seed in the Sun Belt conference standings.

“We are all very disappointed with the result overall,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We were out worked on the day, not to take anything away from Arkansas State, but we just didn't do what we needed to today in terms of working.”

Troy (9-6-1, 4-4 Sun Belt) battled on the defensive end in the first half of the match, but also struggled offensively against a stingy Arkansas State defense. Only seven shots were attempted combined by both sides as the match entered half time scoreless.

In the 62nd minute, Arkansas State forward Kelsey Finders was able to score the first goal of the match off of a rebound off of Troy goalkeeper Ashley Branham.

The Trojans answered back swiftly off the foot of midfielder Cecilia Thorngren who was assisted by fellow midfielder Rochelle Bohuslavicky. The goal was the freshman's fifth of the season.

However, it was in the 78th minute that Arkansas State scored the game-winner. The Red Wolves' Christine Giles delivered the decisive goal as she headed the only corner kick of the match into Troy's goal to steal the victory.

“We have to put this all behind us even though it stings and try to figure out a way to get on the end of a better result on Thursday against a tough Western Kentucky team,” said Bentley.

With only three conference matches remaining, the Trojans find themselves in the midst of a battle for one of the eight spots in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Although the Trojans fell on Sunday, they still find themselves in sixth place in the standings; one game ahead of Louisiana-Lafayette, Florida Atlantic and Arkansas State with three games left to play.
