The Troy University men's golf team will return to action on Monday at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate at Savannah Quarters Country Club.
The Trojans are coming off a tie for 10th place in their last outing, at the Squire Creek Classic, hosted by Louisiana Tech. While the results for the Trojans have not been what he expected, Troy coach Matt Terry is looking for someone to step up and carry the team forward.
“We qualified well for the tournament in Savannah, but I still don't know what to expect from this team,” Terry said. “We have not fared well in our first two events and I need someone to step up and show some leadership through their play.”
Junior Ricky Casko (Cartersville, Ga.) showed signs of taking that leadership role with a top 25 finish in Louisiana despite being a late addition to the lineup and playing the tournament with a bad ankle.
“Casko showed a lot of guts with the way he played at Squire Creek, despite the ankle injury,” Terry said. “Earning a top 25 finish against a good field is a good sign.”
The tournament in Savannah, which is being hosted by Georgia Southern, will be on a Greg Norman designed course that will play to a par 72, covering 7,016 yards.
“It is a really good golf course and the weather is supposed to be perfect,” Terry said. “Georgia Southern has a really good team, but the field is not as strong overall as what we saw last week. Arkansas State, who we tied last week, is in the field and we always want to beat other Sun Belt Conference teams when we can.”
Other teams in the tournament include Armstrong State, Charleston Southern, Davidson, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Gardner-Webb, Georgia College, Jacksonville, USC-Upstate, Winthrop and Wofford.
In addition to Casko, the Trojans who will compete are senior Zach Portemont (Andalusia, Ala.), junior Hunter Harper (Bessemer, Ala.), sophomore Kyle Blackston (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and freshman Will Thompson (Montgomery, Ala.).
The teams will play practice rounds today before opening play for 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (ET). The final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
