Troy Rodeo Completes Strong Year

The Troy University rodeo team recently concluded the 2008-2009 season with a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo. Both the men's and women's teams finished third in the Ozark Region this year, and the men's team finished 22nd in the nation.
The end of the season for the men's team means the departure of two seniors who will be tough to replace. Mark Weber and Ben Mayworth both made lasting impressions on the Trojan rodeo program.
Weber finished seventh in the Ozark Region steer wrestling final standings.
Mayworth finished in the top 15 in the tie down roping and steer wrestling final standings in the Ozark Region, including a second place finish in the tie down roping competition. He finished fourth in the nation in the final tie down roping standings.
The biggest legacy Mayworth leaves is the first rodeo individual national championship in Troy University history. Mayworth was the tie down roping national champion in 2007.
“Our seniors had a great year and we're going to miss them a lot,” head rodeo coach Josh Simmons said. “However, we've got a strong group of juniors that will be back next season. I've talk to all of them this summer and they're practicing hard, preparing for next year.”
Two of those juniors are the team roping duo of Clint Keller and Mark Gentry. Keller finished second in the final standings for headers in the Ozark Region and Gentry finished second in the heeler standings in 2008-09. Both competed, along with Mayworth, at the CNFR in Casper, Wyoming, in June.
The Trojans had three underclassmen finish in the top 10 in the Ozark Region All-Around final standings. Juniors Keller and Jake Thomas finished fourth and seventh respectively and sophomore Aaron Lowe finished 10th.
Lowe and Thomas both finished in the top six in the steer wrestling final standings. Thomas and Lowe joined Keller in the top six in the team roping header final standings. Tyler Ethridge joined Gentry in the top five in the team roping heeler standings.
The women were led by Mary Owens, Whitney Hazouri and Callie Wiginton who finished third, fourth and fifth respectively in the all-around standings in the Ozark Region.
Owens finished third in the final barrel racing standings.
“Our women's team had a good season, but should have an even better season next year,” Simmons said. “They should be a very strong contender for a region championship next season.”
