Senatobia, Miss.- Two different tales were told for the Trojans at the Northwest Mississippi Community College rodeo this weekend.
Some athletes were able to punch their name into the mold for the College National Finals Rodeo and look ahead to a summer out west, while others are looking for a lifeline with only one rodeo left.
Junior Clint Keller came out victorious in the tie-down roping with total time of 19.7 seconds in two rounds of competition. Keller collected 120 points in the event after winning the championship round with a time of 9.3 seconds and the taking overall average.
Senior Ben Mayworth has guaranteed himself his third berth to the CNFR in Casper, Wyoming this summer by earning 95 points in the tie-down roping as well. Mayworth earned his points with a first round time of 9.9 seconds, giving him 45 points, and then 50 more points while finishing fifth in the short round and fourth in the average.
“Clint and Ben really made some great strides for themselves this weekend,” coach Josh Simmons said. “They were able to use what was drawn for them to be successful in the arena.”
Sophomore Alley Hayes was able to capture the first round in the barrel racing after making three turns in 14.77 seconds, the fastest time on the weekend.
Freshman Whitney Hazouri was active in the short round in three different events, the goat tying, team roping, and breakaway roping. She earned 120 points for the weekend in the goat tying finishing third overall with a 16.9 second time on two. Hazouri also gained 80 points in the team roping with partner Lana Chastain of the University of Arkansas-Monticello posting a total time of 34.8 seconds on two steers.
Also gaining points for Troy included sophomore Will Bradley in the tie-down roping and freshman Brittany Drawdy in the barrel racing.
The next rodeo for the Trojans is the last of the regular season at the University of Tennessee-Martin in Martin, Tennessee April 16-18.
