Rodeo Makes Moves In Monticello
3/29/2009 5:00:00 AM | Rodeo
Monticello, AR.- The cold and wet weekend in Monticello, Arkansas could not slow down the Trojan men's rodeo team at the Boll Weevil Stampede.
The men were able to finish second overall with a total of 605 points for the weekend, trailing only the top ranked Missouri Valley College for the overall win.
“We felt confident going into this weekend because of the practice we put in this week,” coach Josh Simmons said. “We had fresh stock this past week for good preparation and it paid off for the men.”
Junior Clint Keller led the Trojans earning 85 points in the calf roping and 80 points in the team roping with his partner and teammate Mark Gentry.
Senior Ben Mayworth was also able to pour on some more points to the Troy total making one of the quickest runs of the weekend in the championship round. Mayworth stopped the clock in 8.6 seconds in the final round and earned 90 points in the calf roping for the Trojans.
The women's team was able to gain a few points in two different events, but did not finish as high as they had anticipated.
“Our women our looking forward after a tough weekend,” Simmons said. “They are within striking distance of taking a full team to the College National Finals Rodeo and they just have to bring it all together in our last two rodeos.”
Sophomore Tabitha Kiker earned 55 points in the breakaway roping after splitting first place in the initial round of competition. Kiker was 2.5 seconds in round one, but was unable to stop the clock in the short round.
Senior Dakota Missledine earned points in the breakaway roping as well after turning in a total time of 8.9 seconds in two rounds of roping. Missledine earned 50 points for the weekend for her efforts.
Others gaining points for the Trojans included junior Callie Wiginton in the goat tying, senior Mark Weber in the steer wrestling, sophomore Aaron Lowe in the steer wrestling and team roping, sophomore Daniel Clemmons in the team roping, junior Mark Gentry in the team roping, and sophomore Will Bradley in the team roping.
The Troy rodeo team will roll into Senatobia, Mississippi next weekend for the first of the final two rodeos for the 2008-2009 season. The rodeo is hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College and runs April 4-6, with performances beginning each night at 7:30p.m.
