MONTICELLO, Ark. - The Troy Rodeo team is traveling to the University of Arkansas-Monticello this weekend to compete in the Boll Weevil Stampede.
This is the first competition in Monticello for the Trojans this year and last year's team roping champion Mark Gentry is looking forward to getting back into his winning ways.
“We are trying to win as much as we can,” Gentry said. “We feel like we have a good shot at making the College National Finals Rodeo and we see our goals as very achievable.”
Gentry is currently first in the team roping standings this year for the Ozark Region of college rodeo with 526 points and looks to be a competitor in his second CNFR as a Trojan.
Junior Mary Owens feels the need to also compete well in order to give her another shot at a national title this June.
“There are five girls that really have a good shot of making the CNFR from our region,” Owens said. “Consistency is key and whoever can stay solid is going to be there when the last run is made.”
Both the men and women's teams competed in seven total rodeos last semester and only have three this semester, which is different from year's past, so now every run counts.
The men's team is currently ranked third overall in the Ozark Region with 3,171 points, trailing Missouri Valley College and the University of Tennessee-Martin.
The women's team is also third in the region with 1,615 points behind Southern Arkansas University and Missouri Valley College.
Action begins in Monticello, Arkansas. Performances start March 28-30, and the rodeo will begin each night at 7:30 p.m.
