TROY, Ala. - In only her second game of the season, Katie Cooper came off the bench and sparked Troy's 4-1 victory over ULL.
The sophomore from Perry, Florida scored the eventual game-winner and added an insurance goal as the Trojans cruised past the Ragin' Cajuns (1-15-1, 1-8 Sun Belt) on Friday afternoon. The two goals were Cooper's first two of the season.
An early lead in the first half helped the Trojans (7-9-1, 3-6 Sun Belt) establish tempo for the remainder of the match.
"Scoring early was a big thing for us," head coach Chris Bentley said. "Once we did that I think it gave us the confidence to finish the game."
Jill Pinder scored the first goal for the Trojans after a Nikki Stamaris cross from the right side of the field found Pinder's head to give the Trojans the 1-0 lead. The score came just 10 minutes into the match.
Stamaris' assist jumped her season total to seven, tying her with three others for the Troy single-season assist record.
Late in the first half, Cooper came off of the bench for her first appearance since she played 36 minutes against Alabama State on September 6.
A breakaway by senior Nicole Targa turned into a cross that snuck past ULL goalie Lauren Berlingo and connected with Cooper's out-stretched foot for the goal and a 2-0 lead going into the half.
Fresh off the halftime break, the Ragin' Cajuns struck back in the 46th minute as Cayla Chatman charged the goal and scored to cut Troy's lead in half, 2-1.
Cooper answered the ULL goal with a goal of her own in the 80th minute following an assist from freshman Katie Wellborn. Wellborn's cross reached the far side of the net and again found the foot of Cooper to extend the Trojans' lead to 3-1.
Troy was not finished as sophomore Mary Morris hammered the ball past Berlingo for a goal and a 4-1 lead. The assist was credited to Mandy Miley.
Goalkeeper Ashley Branham recorded four saves. Troy edged the Cajuns 10-to-9 in the shot column.
"I think we had an all-around good team effort," Bentley said. "Overall I am happy with the result and we just have to keep on moving."
Troy is in action next on Sunday when they host ULM at 1 pm. Admission to all home soccer matches is free.
