TROY, Ala. – Senior Laura Hopson hammered two headers past the Warhawks in the Trojans' 4-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Spring, Texas native put the Trojans (8-9-1, 4-6 SBC) into an offensive groove by scoring the first two goals for Troy. They were her first goals since September 6 and upped her career total to nine.
“Anytime you have a senior step up at the end of the year - its awesome,” Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. “Hopson is really playing well, and it is good to see a player like that get rewarded.”
The Trojans and ULM (2-13-1, 1-8 SBC) battled the field throughout the first half of action before heading into halftime with no score. Troy only managed three shot attempts in the opening half.
“ULM really took it to us in the first half, so credit to them," Bentley said. "ULM changed up their game plan on us and it was a little tough adjusting."
Troy got a good opportunity to get the first score after a foul by the Warhawks set-up a free kick by Bridget Duke in the 55th minute.
Duke fired the ball into the box, where a waiting Hopson flicked a header into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Troy lead.
In the 65th minute, it was déjà vu for the Warhawks after another foul gave the Trojans another quality scoring opportunity.
This time Duke punched the ball into the box where Hopson was again waiting. She was once again able navigate the ball into the left portion of the net for her second goal. It gave her team a 2-0 lead in the second half.
Mary Morris gave the Trojans some insurance with a goal in the 68thminute. April Madden was credited with the assist after she sent a cross to the streaking sophomore Morris. The Alabaster, Ala.-native then drilled a left-footed volley past ULM keeper Mallory George for the 3-0 advantage.
Madden continued Troy's header streak when she tacked on a fourth Trojan goal following an on-target cross from Katie Cooper.
Goalkeeper Ashley Branham picked up her fourth shutout of the season and had five saves on the day.
“It was a really important game,” Bentley said. “ULM came out strong, but we were able to capitalize in the second half.”
The two-victory weekend put the Trojans back into the race for a coveted spot in the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
The Trojans will host Senior Night on Friday as they welcome South Alabama in the final home match of 2009. Kickoff for the match is set for 3 pm. Admission to all soccer matches is free.
