Greer Goes for Three Scores In Trojans' Second Scrimmage

Some Random Thoughts From Tonight's Scrimmage
The Troy Trojans had their second scrimmage of training camp on Thursday night at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium. The scrimmage was slated for 75 plays.
The Trojans will take Friday off before holding a kicking scrimmage Saturday morning. On Sunday the team will begin focusing on their season-opening opponent, Middle Tennessee, by starting installation of the game plan.
Here are a few impressions from the scrimmage, followed by a few statistics.
First impression is that Maurice Greer is going to help this
team. He finished the night with 10 carries for 56 yards and three touchdowns to go with two catches for 18 yards. The junior from
But, the thing that made his first impression even brighter was that he took a swing pass out of the backfield and made a nice gain. If he can handle protection, he'll go a long way toward filling the void left by Sean Dawkins.
Levi Brown came out to lead the second offense against the third defense. He got a first down on a pass to Chip Reeves, the drive stalled when junior Mario Addison slashed into the backfield to make a tackle for loss.
The third drive featured quarterback Jamie Hampton against the second defense behind the second offensive line.
It's pretty obvious that freshman receiver Chip Reeves is going to be player. He's not very big, but he has speed to burn and always seems to be open.
Personally, I love the fact that
I've mentioned the second defense a couple of times, mainly because most of the starters are taking the night off. The four senior defensive backs ? Sherrod Martin, Terence Moore, Tavares Williams and Trevor Ford ? are standing in a group, far from the action, with Bear Woods and Boris Lee close by. Ends Kenny Mainor and Brandon Lang also look like they won't see time tonight.
Sophomore Tanner Jones led a touchdown drive with a mixture of second and third teamers. He hit a big pass to Reeves, down to near the goal line, to set up a short TD run.
While much of the first team defense is sitting out the scrimmage, most of the offense is in action. Sophomores Jerrel Jernigan and DuJuan Harris have not been on the field, and I don't expect they will.
To be honest, I was a little worried about depth at linebacker coming into the year, but Xavier Lamb and Donnell Golden have both looked good in practice and will be able backups to Lee and Woods. David McDowell is also a good player and will make a lot of plays.
Freshman quarterback Dan Parker appeared to have a touchdown pass on deep post, but Jorrick Calvin cut in front of the throw and made an interception at the goal line.
Sam Glusman nailed a 45-yard field goal to end the scrimmage, which lasted just 55 minutes.
