Trojans Fall to New Orleans

“You have to tip your cap to him tonight,” coach Bobby Pierce said. “He pitched a good game but we did hit the ball against him. Our hits just didn't fall tonight.”
The first time UNO got consecutive hits was in the eighth inning when Baxter hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the eighth with a ball over the wall in left center. The Privateers added three more runs in the inning on two singles and two walks. Mark McGonigle picked up an RBI after he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Trojans (16-9, 5-2) were only able to manage two base runners heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. Daryl Otwell and
Otwell broke up the no-hitter in the eighth inning with a bloop-single to center field.
The Trojans cracked the goose egg with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman Adam Bryant ripped a triple just inside the third base line. He scored on a groundout to short by Pettus giving
Tim Wheeler (1-4) tossed a good game but came up a little short. He tossed seven and a third innings giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk.
“Tim threw a great game tonight,” Pierce said. “I hate that we did not back him up with our offense but we have a chance to come back and try again tomorrow.”
Garcia (2-0) gave up the one run in the ninth in three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine.
The Trojans will play UNO in the second game of the series tomorrow night at 6 pm.
