Mary Owens Edges Toward Lead at CNFR

CASPER, Wyo. ? Troy University freshman Mary Owens made a big move during Tuesday's second day of competition at the College National Finals Rodeo.
The Rome, Ga., native moved from 23rd to sixth in the barrel racing competition by posting times of 14.76 and 14.25 seconds. Owens enters the third day of competition trailing leader Robin Webb of Southeastern Oklahoma State by just 1.16 seconds.
Owens leads the Troy women's team, which stands 25th overall after two days of competition. The Troy men are tied for 43rd overall entering the third day of the event.
Sophomore Ben Mayworth moved up one spot overall in the tie down roping competition with a second round time of 9.8 seconds. The Sebring, Fla., native now stands 13th overall with a total score of 20.9 seconds.
The Troy women's team has two others competing in barrel racing, along with Owens. Sophomore Randa Dewees stands 24th overall with a total time of 29.22 after a second round 14.62. Sophomore Camile Cox is in 40th place overall after a 19.42 in the second round dropped her total time to 34.22 through two rounds.
Junior Jackie Jacobs is competing in two other events and has enjoyed mixed results. After receiving no score in the breakaway roping on the opening day, she posted a 3.1 second run on day two, which was the ninth best of the day. She stands 31st overall in the events.
Jacobs did not have as goo luck in the goat tying, posting no score on day two after an 8.3 second run on day one. She stands 46th overall in that event after two days.
The Troy men's team has three other competitors in Wyoming as well, and all three are competing in the team roping events. The freshman tandem of Clint Keller and Ty Etheridge posted a sparkling run of 7.7 seconds in the second round to move to 20th place overall with a combined score of 28.8.
Junior Andy Seiler, who is teaming with Evin Burke of Murray State, struggled to a time of 32.0 seconds in the second round, dropping the tandem to 29th overall with a combined score of 47.0.
Competition in the preliminary rounds will continue today with the finals scheduled to begin on Friday.
