HARRISON, Ark. - The Troy University women's rodeo team strengthened its hold on the Ozark Region lead over the weekend with a convincing victory in the North Arkansas College Rodeo.
The Trojans scored 405 points in the three-day event, out-pacing second place Murray State (295) by 110 points. Arkansas State (220) finished third, followed by Arkansas-Monticello (180), Missouri Valley College (90) and West Alabama (90). Tennessee-Martin (85) and Southern Arkansas (65) rounded out the standings in the event.
"This weekend was very good for us," Troy coach Cliff Toliver said. "The team is stepping up and taking control in the region standings. Even though this team is still very young, I believe they are making Troy proud."
The victory for the Troy women increased their lead in the Ozark Region over second place West Alabama to 615 points. The top two teams in the region at the end of the season advance to the College National Finals rodeo in Wyoming in June.
The biggest scorers for the Troy women in the North Arkansas event were sophomore Camile Cox (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.) and junior Jackie Jacobs (Ashton, Ill.).
Cox led three Trojans in the barrel racing, winning the event with a score of 180. Sophomore April Archer (Crawfordsville, Fla.) finished fifth and freshman Mary Owens (Rome, Ga.) finished seventh in the event. Owens also finished seventh in breakaway roping and placed fourth in the women's all-around.
Jacobs won the goat tying event with a score of 175 to move into a tie in the Ozark region with Lauren Hedrick of West Alabama in the women's all-around standings with 940 points. Sophomore Randa Dewees (Westville, Fla.) is in third in the region all-around standings with 665 points.
The Trojan women have a strangle-hold on the Ozark Region standings in barrel racing, holding down four of the top five spots with two events left. Cox leads the standings with 630 points, followed by Owens in second with 545 and Dewees in third with 410. Archer stands fifth with 355 points while sophomore Randie Jo Williams (Sebring, Fla.) is in a tie for 10th.
Jacobs is also near the top of the region standings in both breakaway roping and goat tying. She stands second in the roping event with 440 points, 90 behind Natasha Parker of West Alabama. Dewees is fifth and freshman Letitia Lockhart (Cullman, Ala.) stands 13th. Jacobs ranks fourth in goat tying with 500 points, 260 behind Amanda Stigall of Murray State.
The Trojans will close the regular season over the next two weekends, competing at Tennessee-Martin this weekend and at Northwest Mississippi Community College April 19-21.
