HARRISON, Ark. - The Troy University men's rodeo team lost ground to Missouri Valley College in the race for second place in the Ozark Region with a third place finish at the North Arkansas College Rodeo over the weekend.
The Trojans scored 600 points in the event, falling by 85 points to Missouri Valley. Southern Arkansas finished second with a score of 640 and West Alabama took fourth with 595. Region leader Tennessee-Martin finished fifth in the event with 593.33 points. Murray State (290), Arkansas-Monticello (90) and North Arkansas (3.33) rounded out the scoring at the event.
The Trojans placed in the top five in five of the six events, but did not earn a victory in any. Freshman Justin Caylor (Opp, Ala.) had the best showing, earning a fifth in saddle bronc and third in bull riding, lifting him to a third place finish in the all-around competition.
Sophomore Ben Mayworth (Sebring,Fla.), who holds the lead in the regional standings in tie down roping, took a third in that event, but still holds a 55 point lead over Clayton Turner of Arkansas State in the Ozark Region standings.
Other Trojans to score in the event included freshman Jake Thomas (Ranger, Ga.) with a fifth in steer wrestling, freshmen Clint Keller (Winston-Salem, NC) and Tyler Etheridge (Franklin, Ga.) with a second in the team roping and freshman Mark Gentry (Pelham, Ala.), who teamed with his brother Matthew for a seventh in team roping. Matthew attends UAB.
Despite not scoring at North Arkansas, Troy sophomore Zak Dobbins (Bay Minette, Ala.) still stands second in the men's all-around in the Ozark Region, just 60 points behind leader Kirk Nelson of Missouri Valley College.
Dobbins and Ethridge rank second and third, respectively, in the region standings for heelers in team roping behind Hugh Bragg of Southern Arkansas. The top two in the region standings in each event qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in June in Wyoming.
The Trojans will close the regular season over the next two weekends, competing at Tennessee-Martin this weekend and at Northwest Mississippi Community College April 19-21.
