LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Troy University rodeo teams posted disappointing finishes over the weekend at the University of West Alabama rodeo.
The Troy women finished a distant second to host West Alabama while the Trojan men finished fifth of eight teams.
"We had a fair showing this weekend, but the rain really seemed to affect us," Troy rodeo coach Cliff Toliver said. "We just have to put this weekend behind us and get fired up for the final event of the fall to finish on a high note."
The Troy rodeo teams will compete in their final event of the fall November 16-18 at Murray State.
The final team scores in the event saw the Troy women with 275 points, 300 behind West Alabama. Arkansas-Monticello finished third with 206.6 points while Murray State (195) and Arkansas State (100) rounded out the field.
On the men's side, Tennessee-Martin won the event with a score of 725. They were followed by Arkansas-Monticello in second (540), Missouri Valley College in third (520), Southern Arkansas in fourth (470), Troy in fifth (320) tied with West Alabama, Murray State in seventh (225) and Arkansas State in eighth (70).
The two bright spots for the Trojans at West Alabama were the barrel racing and team roping competitions. Freshman Camile Cox (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.) led three Trojans to strong finishes in the barrel racing, winning the events with times of 16.76 and 17.01.
Freshman Mary Owens (Rome, Ga.) finished fourth with times of 16.8 and 17.14 while sophomore April Archer (Crawfordsville, Ark.) finished sixth with times of 16.65 and 21.76.
In the team roping event, Troy freshman Zak Dobbins (Bay Minnette, Ala.) teamed with Bart Brunson of Arkansas-Monticello to win the event with times of 5.9 and 6.6 seconds. Troy sophomore Ben Mayworth (Sebring, Fla.) teamed with Jill Cooper of Vanderbilt for a 7th place finish.
Three Trojans finished in the points in the calf roping competition, with Dobbins earning a third place, freshman Mark Weber (Morton, Ill.) a sixth and freshman Clint Keller (Winston-Salem, NC) a seventh. Weber also earned a sixth place finish in steer wrestling.
The only other scoring finish for the Troy women was a sixth place by junior Jackie Jacobs (Ashton, Ill.) in the goat tying event.
