Brandon Gilbert enters his sixth season as an assistant coach in 2025-26. Gilbert has been instrumental in Troy's last six recruiting classes, including the class of 2021, which helped lead Troy to its first postseason bid in five years andย first 20-win season in head coach Scott Cross' tenure.
The Trojans enter the 2025-26 season as the only team in the Sun Belt to record four consecutive 20-win seasons and the only program with 10 or more conference wins in each of the last four years.ย
The 2024-25 season marked Troyโs first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2016-17. The team finished the regular season 23-11 overall and 13-5 in Sun Belt play, earning the conference regular season title.ย
Troy won three consecutive games in the Sun Belt Tournament, including a championship victory over No. 4 seed Arkansas State. The Trojans rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.ย
The 2023-24 season saw Troy win 20 regular season games for the third consecutive season, as well winning double-digit conference games for the third straight year. The Trojans were the only team in the Sun Belt to achieve that mark. The Trojans finished the regular season third in the Sun Belt, which is the highest they have finished during Scott Crossโ tenure. Troy was picked eighth in the coaches preseason poll. Troy played three nationally televised games and forced Oregon State into a double overtime showdown in Corvallis, Ore.
In 2022-23 Gilbert helped the Trojans to a 20-13 overall record, including an 11-7 Sun Belt record and berth in the Sun Belt Tournament quarterfinals. The Trojans far exceeded projections finishing fifth in the league, just a game out of fourth and three out of first, after being picked 10thย in the preseason poll.
The non-conference slate saw the Trojans knock off Florida State, 79-72, in Tallahassee; Troy's first victory over a major-conference opponent since 2012 and first against an ACC opponent since a 1981 victory over Georgia Tech. Additionally, Troy led national-runner up San Diego State by eight points midway through the second half of a 5-point loss to the Aztecs.
Before coming to Troy, Gilbert was a two-time Texas District 6 6A Coach of the Year after leading Arlington Lamar High School to a 2020 District 6A championship. He also earned the honor after leading Killeen Shoemaker High School to the 2018 district title.
Gilbert, aย Madisonville, Texas, native, spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach before leading a team. He began his coaching career at Athens (Texas) High School from 2006-09 before joining the staff at South Grand Prairie (Texas) High School, that he broke through as the defensive engineer. Gilbert got his first taste of glory in 2013 when Grand Prairie battled for a Class 6A state championship; the program was a two-time regional finalist with Gilbert on staff.
In his playing days, Gilbert was known as a defensive specialist, rebounder and finisher while playing for his alma mater, North Texas, from 1998-00. He transferred to North Texas from Kilgore College, where he spent two seasons (1996-98). Gilbert led the Rangers to a No. 3 overall ranking in 1998.
Gilbert earnedย his bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in criminal justice from North Texas in 2000.
