Billy Begley enters his second season as an assistant coach at Troy in 2014-15. Highlighting the 2013-14 season was a 85-81 win over Georgia State in Trojan Arena on ESPN2, which was the Panthers’ lone loss in Sun Belt play.
He joined the staff after spending three seasons at East Mississippi Community College as an assistant coach. Begley also enjoyed a four-year playing career at Mississippi State, all while Troy head coach Phil Cunningham was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs.
During his three seasons at EMCC, Begley helped the Lions win three straight National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII championships, leading to appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament in all three seasons as well. The Lions were the only team in the nation to make three straight tournament appearances in that span.
Begley helped EMCC to a 63-11 overall record in his three seasons, including a 33-3 mark in conference play. During Begley’s three seasons the Lions produced five NJCAA All-America selections and had 10 players sign Division I scholarships.
Prior to his time at EMCC, Begley spent one season as an assistant coach at Nicholls State of the Southland Conference.
Begley’s coaching career began in 2008-09 when he spent one season as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Mississippi State, working on Rick Stansbury’s staff. During that season, the Bulldogs won the SEC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
A three-time team captain for the Bulldogs, Begley spent five seasons on the MSU roster from 2003 to 2008. During that time, Mississippi State won two SEC West Division titles, one overall SEC Regular Season Championship, made three trips to the NCAA Tournament Second Round and one trip to the NIT Semifinals.
Begley was a four-time Academic All-SEC selection and was also a member of the 2007-08 SEC Good Works Team. He earned the Craig Newsome Award (highest team GPA) twice.Â
Begley received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Mississippi State in 2007 before his senior season on the court. He received his master’s degree in business administration from Mississippi State in 2008.
