Shayne Wasden enters his seventh season on the Troy University football staff, and in the collegiate ranks. He has served as receivers coach and special teams coordinator for the past five seasons, and was promoted to Assistant Head Coach in January 2008.
While coaching at Troy University, Wasden has had the opportunity to coach many great players. One player, Troy receiver Gary Banks, set the single-season receiving record before another player, receiver Jerrel Jernigan, broke that record last season. He has also had the opportunity to coach Troy's all-time leading punter, Thomas Olmstead, Troy's all-time leader in field goals, Greg Whibbs, and Troy's all-time leader in punt returns, Leodis McKelvin.
During the first year under Wasden's leadership, the special teams improved in four out of five national rankings. The punt return position improved from 95th to within the top 30 in all four years under Wasden's tutelage. Two seasons ago, McKelvin finished fourth in the nation in punt returns. In each of Wasden's first four seasons, Troy had at least one special teams unit rank in the top 25 nationally.
During his time at Troy, Wasden has helped the Trojans win three conference championships and appear in two bowl games.
Wasden joined the staff in May 2004, following a successful career as a high school head coach in Alabama. He served as the head coach at Georgiana, Opp and Eufaula High Schools. In 11 seasons as a high school head coach, Wasden's teams posted a record of 91 wins and 34 losses and advanced to the postseason 10 times. In his final year at Eufaula, his team finished 11-1 and was ranked number one in the state in Class 5A to end the regular season.
Wasden came to Troy as a familiar face to Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney, having played wide receiver for him when he was an assistant coach at Auburn University in the late 1980s. He earned three letters while at Auburn, and played in three bowl games (1987-90) for the Tigers.
Coaching comes naturally to the Wasden family. In addition to his father, Bobby Wasden, who coached for more than 35 years, Shayne's brother Tommy also coaches at the high school level.
A 1992 graduate of Auburn, with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science, Wasden added a Master's in Education Administration from Troy University in 1998.
Wasden is married to the former Patrice Moseley, and the couple has two daughters; Mary Beth (16) and Anna Shay (12).
