TROY, Ala. - Troy soccer was upended by West Florida on Monday afternoon, 3-1.Â
Troy (1-5-1) conceded goals in the 13th and 53rd minutes as the Argonauts built a 2-0 advantage. The Trojans were able to cut the deficit in half as Isla Boyle headed home her first goal of the season. However, West Florida rebuilt its two-goal lead just two minutes later on a Troy own goal.Â
The Trojans were forced to play with 10 players for the final 22 minutes of the match after Brooke Slater was sent off for denying a West Florida (3-0-0) goal-scoring opportunity.Â
Troy was able to hold its own during that time, scoring a goal while allowing West Florida five shots compared to its four.Â
The scoring opened in the 13th minute with West Florida's Kaitlyn Herb splitting through defenders and finishing for her second goal of the season.Â
Chances followed for the Trojans, including a header directly in front of goal from Sofia Sasan that was saved by UWF goalkeeper Karla Guzman-Ortiz.Â
It did not take long for the Argonauts to double their lead coming out of halftime. Dolev Ovadya headed home a ball in the 53rd minute to give West Florida a 2-0 advantage.Â
Slater picked up the red card in the 68th minute on a West Florida attacking chance. Slater brought down the Argonauts' Arnicka Louis at the edge of the box with no one but Trojan goalkeeper Taylor Richards between Louis and the goal, resulting in her being sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.Â
Despite playing with just 10 players, Troy fought back, scoring its only goal of the day in the 81st minute. First year Isla Boyle received a ball from Brooke Becker that took a touch off Guzman-Ortiz's gloves before Boyle capitalized, heading in her first career goal.Â
However, just two minutes later, West Florida put the match away for good. A soft ball into Troy's box found the head of a Trojan defender and went backward into the Troy goal, resulting in the 3-1 final score.Â
Quotable – Head Coach Jake WymanÂ
"Tough one today. I thought we didn't do ourselves any favors with how we defended. To get one back showed good character, but conceding the own goal to make it 3-1 killed us. I thought the girls fought given the fact we were done a man for the majority of the second half, but it's tough."Â
NotablesÂ
- First year Isla Boyle's goal was the first of her career. Boyle is the fourth Trojan this season to find the back of the net for the first time.Â
- Monday's loss marked Troy's first non-conference home loss since Sept. 7, 2023, a 1-0 defeat to Samford.Â
- Third year Brooke Becker made the first start of her career. Becker earned an assist on Troy's lone goal of the day.Â
- Troy is now 0-1-0 all-time against West Florida.Â
