TROY, Ala. - Troy soccer was defeated by a 2-1 scoreline on Thursday night, falling to Marshall in the Trojans' Sun Belt home opener.

Troy (1-7-2, 0-2-0 SBC) played significant minutes with 10 players after Sofia Sasan was sent off with a red card in the 32nd minute.

Despite not finding the back of the net, the Trojan offense created significant chances, putting seven shots on goal while taking 15 attempts overall.

Troy took the first two shots of the match, as Melanie Oldner won a corner off a deflection in the third minute and took another shot moments later.

Marshall (5-2-3, 1-0-1 SBC) also had its chances in the first half, perhaps none better than a 14th-minute attempt from Nicole Navarro that was snagged out of the air by Taylor Richards. Richards would go on to make four saves in the match.

The 32nd-minute red card came from a tackle by Sofia Sasan. Originally called a yellow, the play was elevated to a red card following VAR.

The scoreline was level at zero as the teams went to the locker room.

The scoring opened halfway through the second half, as Larissa Ozorio perfectly struck a ball from the edge of the box into the bottom-left corner of the net to give Marshall the 1-0 advantage.

The Herd would double its lead in the 70th minute. Delfina Lombardi played a through ball and pushed it past Richards into the top-left corner.

The scoring flurry continued just two minutes later, this time with Troy getting on the scoreboard as Braelyn Carey tapped in a cross that deflected off a Marshall player. The goal marked the first career goal for Carey.

Troy began to pressure despite being down a player, holding the majority of possession in the final 15 minutes. Despite this, the Trojans were unable to find the equalizer, and Marshall held on for the 2-1 win.

"Tough one for us tonight. I thought that we were the better team. I thought we were able to get at them in the first half and create a few good chances. We obviously didn't capitalize on those chances early, but I thought we limited them to shots from distance in the first half. When you get the red card it changes the landscape of the game, I'm proud of the girls' efforts, but I'm disappointed in the result."

Troy is now 0-3-0 against Marshall.
Troy put seven shots on goal opposed to Marshall's six; it was the second-straight match the Trojans have put more shots on target than their opponent.
Georgia Mulholland started in her first match of the season. Mulholland previously appeared in two matches off the bench after returning from an injury that sidelined her for the first seven matches of the season.
Braelyn Carey was the seventh first-time goal scorer for Troy this season.
