MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Troy cross country team nearly swept the Montevallo Falcon Classic Friday night at the Montevallo XC Course, with the men winning the 8K on 40 points and the women finishing runner-up with 66 points in the 5K.
"Clearly, the teams are happy with a runner-up for the women and a win for the men's team," head coach Brian Cunningham said. "What I'm happy about is the execution within the race from both squads, and the fact that none of them are satisfied with the performances tonight. We have plenty more to learn, but we are going to be happy with the team results tonight."
Troy claimed its first victory since 2016, when both the men's and women's sides won first at the Doc Anderson Wiregrass Invitational. The Trojans had two top-five finishes as Riley Treadaway paced the field for a second-place finish and a personal best (25:46.00). Lane Watson followed 22 seconds behind for fifth at 26:08.00.
Caden Blackman (26:23.50) and Patterson Graham (26:24.50) crossed the line back-to-back for sixth and seventh, respectively, with Pierre Boerkey closing out the scorers in 20th at 27:30.20.
AUM won the women's side, with the Trojans 39 points behind for silver. Newcomers, Winny Kosgei (4th – 19:03.40), Abby Jepkemboi (12th – 19:34.10) and Pheline Mining (16th – 19:53.00) all ran personal bests for top 20 finishes for Troy.
Meanwhile, fourth-year Giulianna Rivero also had a personal best for an 18th-place finish, while Lucy Turley was the Trojans' fifth scorer in 21st at 20:05.00.
