TROY, Ala. - Troy topped South Alabama 8-1 in Sunday's series finale at Riddle-Pace Field, taking the series from the Jaguars for the second straight season.
Junior left-hander Hayden Smith set the tone for the Trojans (26-26, 15-12 SBC) with six scoreless frames, limiting the Jaguars (31-20, 15-12 SBC) to three hits - all singles - with three strikeouts and three walks. Offensively, Troy exploded for ten hits, scoring five runs on four hits against South starter Daniel Gonzalez in 4.2 innings.
Leadoff man Aaron Piasecki put Troy on the board in the third with a two-run blast over the Trojan wall in right field before a three-spot with a fifth-inning, two-out rally. Piaseki walked and Josh Pyne singled to knock out Gonzalez and bring in Zach Stevens, who allowed back-to-back doubles to Blake Cavill and Jimmy Janicki to put the three runs across.
In the sixth, Jabe Boroff blasted a two-run homer to left field, which was the first homer that Stevens had surrendered this season. Troy tacked on another in the eighth on an RBI single by Piasecki against reliever Hayden O'Dell.
The Troy bullpen of Cooper Ellingworth and Noah Thigpen limited the Jaguars to one run in the final three innings. South scored one run on two hits and a sac fly in the seventh before Ellingworth and Thigpen worked back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth.
Notables
Head Coach Skylar Meade on the win…
"We just played really good baseball all across the board, offensively and defensively. Pitching, I thought the guys were really nasty - all three threw today, so very excited about that. Excited about some big swings."
Catcher Jabe Boroff on drawing two walks and hitting a home run…
"I was just trying to stay patient. Not do too much and get good pitches to hit. My second AB, where I struck out, I was just a little too big, trying to do too much. Me and Coach Wolgamot talked about how I was doing too much on that second AB, so I was just trying to simplify, and that's what led to the homer, just being as simple as possible."
Hayden Smith on his performance on the mound…
"It's no secret that I pitch to contact. That's my whole game plan. Especially when I get some run support, it makes it really easy to go out there and just be comfortable with making them hit it."

Troy closes the regular season with a four-game road trip. The Trojans will head to UAB for their final midweek game on Tuesday before a three-game Sun Belt series at ULM Thursday through Saturday.
