CONWAY, S.C – The Troy softball team fell 2-1 and 5-4 in a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina on Friday, as the Chanticleers (24-30, 8-16 SBC) took two walk-off wins. The Trojans (32-21, 10-14 SBC) battled in both games to end the regular season.
Troy now awaits its seeding for the Sun Belt Tournament in Lafayette, La., next week. The Trojans are locked into either the No. 8 or No. 9 seed, and could play either Georgia Southern or Louisiana on Wednesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. CT.
Dailynn Motes finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs, a homer, a double and two runs. Presley Ivey also had a strong day from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-6 with an RBI and a walk. As a team, the Trojans stole their 100th and 101st bases on the season, the first time since 2016 the program has had triple-digit steals.
The Troy pitchers also had solid outings against a tough Coastal Carolina lineup – Abby Lovell notched her 100th strikeout on the season, allowing just two runs across 6.1 innings in game one. In game two, Savannah Money held the Chanticleers scoreless for 2.1 innings and Ella Cunningham gave up one run in 2.1 innings of her own.
TROY 1, Coastal 2
The Trojans dropped game one 2-1 as Coastal Carolina walked it off, allowing two runs in the final two innings of a low-scoring affair. Abby Lovell held a powerful Chanticleers offense in check, but Troy couldn't get any insurance runs late.
Lovell earned her 100th strikeout of the season in the game, scattering four hits and striking out three over 6.1 innings of work. She's the first Troy freshman pitcher since Leanna Johnson in 2019 to earn triple-digit strikeouts in a season.
Presley Ivey led the offense with a 2-for-3 outing, driving in an RBI. Kiley Huffman and Dailynn Motes each had doubles in the contest, with Huffman stealing a base to get the Trojans to triple-digits this season.
Lovell struck out Coastal Carolina power hitter Georgia Hood in the first inning to earn strikeout No. 100 on the season and hold the Chanticleers scoreless.
In the second, Lovell struck out another to keep Coastal Carolina off the board before the Troy offense got chugging in the third.
Motes drilled a double off the wall in right field wall for Troy's first hit in the game. With two outs, Ivey started the scoring for the second straight game with an RBI single to right, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Sophia Jenkins made a diving snag and Lovell worked around a Chanticleers hit in the bottom of the third to hold the lead. Although Huffman drilled a double to left-center field in the fourth, Troy couldn't widen the lead.
Lovell earned punchout No. 3 in a scoreless fourth inning before sitting Coastal Carolina down one-two-three in the fifth inning. The Trojans threatened in the sixth after an Ivey single and a Makaley Boswell walk but couldn't scrape across the insurance runs. A double steal pushed Troy over the century mark on the season.
The Chanticleers tied it up with a solo home run off the bat of Delaney Keith in the sixth inning and walked it off in the seventh to win 2-1.
TROY 4, Coastal 5
The Trojans were walked off by Coastal Carolina 5-4 in game two, dropping another close contest. A three-run homer off the bat of Dailynn Motes helped Troy score four in the second, but the Chanticleers clawed back to win in with a walk-off walk.
Along with Motes' long ball, Kalee Rochinski hit an RBI single and scored a run. Savannah Money held Coastal Carolina scoreless for 2.1 innings and struck out one.
Ivey led the game off with a single, but the Trojans couldn't strike in the first as Esmee Ames took the circle. Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the bottom half, with another homer off the bat of Keith and a sacrifice fly making it 2-0.
Mya Holt drew a walk and Megan Loftis singled in the second inning to get things rolling. Rochinski rocked an RBI single to left field to score one, and Motes throttled a three-run home run to left-center to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead.
Coastal Carolina tied it up 4-4 in the second inning, knocking Ames out of the game. Both teams went scoreless in the third inning, with Savannah Money working the first scoreless frame of the game.
In the fourth inning, a Troy error helped the Chanticleers load the bases, but Money kept them scoreless. Ella Cunningham entered to pitch in the fifth inning, working around a walk to keep it tied.
Cunningham singled in the sixth, but Troy couldn't take the lead back. However, she spun a scoreless sixth inning behind strong outfield defense, as Kiley Huffman laid out for a spectacular catch in right.
The Chanticleers loaded the bases in the seventh, walking it off on a walk.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a tough one with two walk-offs, not being on the good side of it is never fun. Being on the road in the Sun Belt is tough. We talk about it all the time in pre-game huddles and post-game huddles, it's about adapting from at-bat to at-bat, and the team that executes better is going to win."
