STATESBORO, Ga. – A three-run third inning powered the Troy softball team past Georgia Southern 6-3 to seal the series win. The Trojans (27-17, 7-10 SBC) took the lead on a two-out, pinch-hit double off the bat of Sophia Jenkins and didn't look back.
Jenkins' two-RBI double with the bases loaded turned the momentum in favor of Troy, and Ella Cunningham (6-4) held the Eagles (19-25, 6-11 SBC) in check with 3.1 strong innings out of the bullpen. Abby Lovell earned her third save of the year.
Makaley Boswell finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs after hitting two RBI singles. Also having a strong day at the dish was Presley Ivey, who went 1-for-1 with two runs and two walks.
Georgia Southern got it started in the first, hitting a solo homer to go up 1-0. In the second, Ella Cunningham crushed a double and scored on an Eagles error to make it 1-1. Georgia Southern took the lead back in the bottom half, scoring on an RBI single.
The Trojans wasted no time tying the game back up, with Ivey walking and scoring on an RBI single from Boswell. After a Mia Tidmore single and a walk from Cunningham, Jenkins entered as a pinch-hitter and drove in two with a double down the right-field line.
Cunningham entered the circle with a 4-2 lead, striking out one in a scoreless third inning. She struck out one more in the fourth to maintain the lead and got her third punchout in the fifth to continue her scoreless outing.
Lovell entered the game in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third and one away. The Eagles hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3, but Lovell ended the frame with a strikeout.
The Trojans got things going in the seventh with singles from Ivey and Loftis. Boswell got yet another RBI base knock, driving in a run to make it 5-3. Kiley Huffman lined a sacrifice fly to left field to give Troy another insurance run. Lovell closed it out with a one-two-three seventh to end the game.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a good day. Anytime you can execute, you give yourself a chance to win a series and to get the series win in Statesboro feels really good. There's been times during conference season that we've struggled a bit – this feels good and I'm happy for the girls. They've continued to work and put their heads down every day. This feels nice, but we talked about how we don't want to be satisfied in the huddle. We had timely hitting, good defense and timely pitching today."
