WEST POINT, Miss. – Facing a field with three top-20 teams and 10 ranked inside the top 75 nationally, the Troy men's golf team is in sixth place following Monday's opening two rounds of the Mossy Oak Collegiate at the Mossy Oak Golf Course.
Troy rebounded from a rocky first round to shoot 4-under in the afternoon and climb seven spots into sixth, just a shot back of South Alabama for fifth and just five shots back of No. 17 Alabama.
The Trojans' top three golfers all shot under-par in the second round, led by Thomas Crane's 6-under 66, in addition to a pair of 71s from Lee Poppell and Pablo Gracia. Crane carded eight birdies in the round, four on each side of the course, and is tied for fourth in the field with nine overall.
Gracia leads the field with a 2-under on the course's par-3 holes, while Crane is tied for seventh at 4-under on the par-5s. Collectively, Troy is tied for third at 5-over on the par 3s while sitting 8-under on the par 5s.
Crane and Poppell are tied for 20th at even-par through the opening 36 holes of play. Poppell finished the day with seven birdies, including four in his round of 71 on the second trip through the course. Crane's 66 came after a 78 in the morning, where he carded just one birdie.
Gracia also had four birdies in his second round to push his card within a stroke of par, good for a tie for 28th place. Haston Emblom is tied for 58th place at 5-over after seven birdies in rounds of 73 and 76, while Lawton Emblom added four birdies in rounds of 77 and 78 to place him in a tie for 84th place.
Troy holds a 13-shot advantage over No. 51 Cincinnati in addition to leads over Sun Belt foes Coastal Carolina, Southern Miss and ULM.
Tuesday's final round pairings have teams in foursomes beginning at 8 a.m., with Troy matched up with South Alabama, Memphis and Kansas State.
