TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team lost 2-1 to Texas State on Sunday afternoon in a tightly-contested game. The Trojans (25-17, 5-10 SBC) were shut down by Bobcats (28-16, 9-6 SBC) pitchers Madison Azua and Emma Strood.
Kiley Huffman finished the game 2-for-3, and Mia Tidmore logged a three-hit game -- their 13th and 11th multi-hit contests, respectively. Huffman also collected an outfield assist, making a beautiful read off the wall to hose a Bobcat runner trying for second base.
Mya Holt recorded Troy's lone RBI, going 1-for-2. From the circle, Holt (2-4) fired four innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen, allowing five hits. Abby Lovell started the game, allowing one run over three innings of work.
Lovell worked around a walk in the first, with Rochinski catching a runner stealing to end the inning. It was her fourth straight game catching a runner stealing, the first time in recorded history since at least 2013 a Troy catcher has nabbed a runner in four straight.
While singles from Tidmore and Huffman in the first loaded the bases with no outs, Troy couldn't score. Lovell allowed two baserunners in the second but worked out of it with a strikeout.
Texas State hit a solo home run in the third inning to take the lead, but the offense went back to work with singles from Boswell and Huffman in the third. Entering as a pinch-hitter, Holt dropped a perfect bunt to tie it at 1-1.
Holt entered to pitch in the fourth inning, and the Bobcats took the lead back on a wild pitch after a single and a walk. In the fifth inning, Holt hung a zero thanks in part to a stellar outfield assist for Hufman.
Tidmore recorded her second hit of the game to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but the Trojans couldn't tie it up. While Texas State loaded the bases in the sixth, Holt kept the score at 2-1.
Holt held the Bobcats in check in the seventh. Tidmore punched a single up the middle with two outs, but the Trojans were struck out to end it.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a good game, but we weren't on the good side of it. It was a really good pitcher's duel. I liked what I saw out of Abby and loved what I saw from Mya – those were some of the best innings she's thrown this year, and she held a very good Texas State team down. The difference in that game is just a couple bloop hits after a walk in the fourth. It was such a razor-thin difference, and that's the encouraging thing that we're going to tell the team in the huddle. Although we didn't win a game in the series, we were incredibly close."
