TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team dropped a 5-0 game to Texas State on Saturday. While Esmee Ames fired five scoreless innings in her first career Sun Belt Conference start for the Trojans (25-16, 5-9 SBC), the Bobcats (27-16, 8-6 SBC) got to her in the sixth.
Ames struck out six batters and allowed just four hits and three runs across six innings against the Texas State offense, with Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Aiyana Coleman getting the big hit to break the tie.
Megan Loftis recorded her fifth multi-hit game in the last seven contests, recording two singles. Makaley Boswell went 1-for-2 with a walk, and Lydaia Kirby roped a single to right in her only at-bat.
Ames worked around a single in the first to hang a zero. She struck out two in the second inning to keep it scoreless. Despite a Loftis single in the bottom of the second, the Trojans couldn't get on the board.
Ames struck out her third batter of the game in a one-two-three third inning and kept the Bobcats scoreless in the fourth as well. While Boswell drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half, the game stayed scoreless heading into the fifth inning.
Another strikeout in the fifth brought Ames to six punchouts, as she worked her fifth straight scoreless inning. Sophia Jenkins drew a walk, but two straight groundouts ended the trouble for Texas State pitcher Emma Strood.
Texas State loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and took the lead on a three-RBI off the bat of Aiyana Coleman. Boswell punched a single to shortstop in the sixth but Troy couldn't cut into the deficit.
Mya Holt entered in relief in the seventh inning, and Texas State added two more runs to extend the lead to 5-0. She struck out Coleman to prevent the Bobcats from scoring more.
Kirby and Loftis recorded back-to-back singles to start the seventh, but the Trojans couldn't avoid the shutout.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"The elephant in the room is that we have a great record, but Sun Belt play has not been kind to us. That's disappointing for sure and I know the girls are disappointed. Esmee pitched really, really well today, and I hate that we couldn't put more together offensively for her. Strood from Texas State also pitched well, and they were able to get the big hit in the sixth where we couldn't get one. Megan Loftis continued her hot streak, and there were glimpses of things that were positive, but to fall today is disappointing yet again. We still have breath in our lungs and softball in front of us so we'll rebound and get after it tomorrow."
