STATESBORO, Ga. - Troy fell 10-0 in eight innings to Georgia Southern at J.I. Clements Stadium on Saturday as the Eagles clinched the series victory.
The Trojans (11-16, 3-5 SBC) recorded just two hits against the Eagles' (9-18, 3-5 SBC) pitching staff, a leadoff double by Aaron Piasecki and an eight-inning single by Dillon Kuehl. Georgia Southern lefty Carter DeGondea pitched five innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and one hit to start, while righty Jax Lewis pitched three innings in relief with one hit, one walk, and a strikeout.
The Georgia Southern offense started out strong offensively with a three-run first inning, recording three walks and two hits in the opening frame. After Alonso put the Eagles down 1-2-3 in the second, they scored four runs in the fourth, capitalizing on a pair of Trojan errors. Alonso finished with three innings pitched, six hits, seven runs - four earned, three walks and no strikeouts.
The Trojans made a plethora of substitutions in the fourth inning and beyond, as centerfielder Steven Meier and DH Dillon Kuehl were the only players to finish the game in the same position. First baseman Blake Cavill moved to third and Piasecki moved from right field to second base while Troy used six players off the bench, including two-way freshman Brady Richardson, who played shortstop for the first time this season.
Noah Thigpen was solid in relief, striking out five in three innings. The righty allowed four hits, one run and one walk before lefty Chase Cartron worked a scoreless seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts. Troy turned to righty Judah Buckner in the eighth, his first appearance of the season, and the Eagle offense ended the game early after a walk, three hits and a wild pitch put the run-rule into effect.
Notables
Quotable
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"You've got to respect the game. If we're not going to be good offensively, we have to maintain defensive execution, but we did not do that, and it will not be accepted. Incredibly disappointing that's the effort we gave."
Next Up
Troy and Georgia will wrap up the series at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday at J.I. Clements Stadium.
