TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team clinched its first Sun Belt Conference series win of the season with a 4-2 win over Georgia State. Four runs in the first three innings powered the Trojans (19-10, 2-3 SBC) as they withstood a late rally from the Panthers (19-13, 1-4 SBC).
Dailynn Motes tied a career high with three hits in a 3-for-3 outing, crushing two doubles and collecting an RBI and a stolen base. As part of her 15th multi-hit game this season, Makaley Boswell crushed a homer to left field.
In the circle, Ella Cunningham (6-1) spun her second consecutive complete game, allowing one earned run over seven innings and striking out three. She scattered six hits in the contest.
Although the Panthers got a walk and a single in the first inning, Cunningham struck out one to hang a zero. At the plate, Cunningham drew a walk, but Troy didn't get on the board. In the second, Cunningham worked around a walk to get out of the frame unscathed.
The Troy offense got going with a leadoff single from Presley Ivey, and Motes followed it up with a single of her own. The Trojans took a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly from Kalee Rochinski and extended it to 2-0 with an RBI single from Howard.
Following a quick inning from Cunningham, the Trojans widened the lead with a leadoff home run from Boswell to left-center field. A Panthers error gave Troy another baserunner – Motes annihilated a double to center field to make it 4-0.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth. Georgia State scored one in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. The Jaguars used two Troy errors to add one more run in the sixth, but Ivey threw out a runner at home, turning a double play to get out of a bases-loaded jam.
Motes collected her third hit of the day with a sixth-inning double, but the Trojans couldn't add on. Cunningham worked around two baserunners in the seventh, striking out one to finish the complete game.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"That was a tight one, and we knew Georgia State was going to push us pretty hard today. The fifth, sixth and seventh innings had the fans on the edge of their seats I'm sure, not so much in a good way for us. We were resilient and found ways and get outs. Although it was closer than we wanted, we took care of business to get the win and the series win."
