MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy softball team fell 7-0 to South Alabama in game two of the series. The Trojans (16-9, 0-2 SBC) struggled to get any offense going, logging three hits against the Jaguars (18-11, 2-0 SBC).
Ella Cunningham (4-1) started the game, racking up eight strikeouts in five innings of work. She recorded one of Troy's hits, lacing a line drive back to the pitcher in the first inning. Kiley Huffman and Megan Loftis also collected singles in the seventh inning.
A hit from Cunningham in the first inning was all the Trojans could get to start the game. In the bottom half, the Jaguars struck first with a two-out rally, putting them up 3-0.
While the Trojans couldn't turn a Loftis walk into a run in the second, Cunningham struck out two from the circle in the second to hang a zero. Another strikeout in the third helped Cunningham work another scoreless frame. She struck out the side in the fourth to keep things close.
The Trojan offense couldn't get a spark in the fifth inning, and South Alabama added a run on a solo homer in the bottom half. A Makaley Boswell walk in the sixth inning gave Troy a baserunner with two outs, but the Trojans couldn't get anything going.
Emma Banks entered in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Lillie Stagner made it 5-0 with a solo home run. Mya Holt also pitched in the frame as the Jaguars took a 7-0 lead.
In the seventh, Huffman and Loftis hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Sophia Jenkins drew a walk to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the game.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"We did not play well. We got punched in the throat in the first inning. Defensively and offensively, we didn't play well. You can chalk it up by saying 'that's just a bat-and-ball sport,' but we've got to be better. It's unacceptable, and we have to reflect and hold each other accountable and get better from this."
