Troy Opens Conference Play at South Alabama

TROY, Ala. – Following a midweek win, the Troy softball team opens Sun Belt Conference play with a series at South Alabama. The Trojans (16-7) take on the Jaguars (16-11) to kick off a tough conference slate.
Under head coach Eric Newell, Troy is 6-2-1 in conference opening series. Last season, the Trojans opened conference play with a series win over Coastal Carolina, which was No. 19 in the NCAA RPI at the time. This year, the Trojans enter the weekend at No. 85 in the RPI while the Jaguars are No. 52.
The Trojan offense has scored a combined 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings of the past two games. As a pitching staff, Troy has allowed 10 runs in the past five games and earned a shutout over Florida Gulf Coast over the weekend.

Ella Cunningham powered the team from the circle and the plate. She fired a complete game, tying a school record (since at least 2009) with 17 strikeouts and setting a record by sitting down 12 consecutive batters via the punchout.
