TROY, Ala. - Troy Baseball returns to Riddle-Pace Field this weekend to open Sun Belt Conference play, hosting Old Dominion in a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
The Trojans closed their first chapter of the season with a 6-10 record, having played the nation's No. 12 strength of schedule. Last season, Troy went 18-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, finishing third, while winning each of its first nine conference series.
Troy is coming off a six-game stretch against power-conference opponents, most recently dropping a series to Maryland before falling at Alabama in a midweek matchup. Aaron Piasecki homered twice during the Maryland series, while Jimmy Janicki went deep at Alabama, giving both players four home runs on the season.
Right-hander Tommy Egan will get the ball in Friday's Sun Belt opener after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings against Maryland in his last start. Lefty Benjamin Stubbs moves to Saturday after starting the finale in each of Troy's first four weekends, most recently allowing just one run over 6.0 innings against Maryland. Head coach Skylar Meade has not yet announced a starter for Sunday's series finale.
Old Dominion enters conference play with an 8-7 record. The Monarchs dropped a weekend series to UConn before falling 11-0 to East Carolina on Tuesday. Offensively, ODU is hitting .308 as a team, second in the Sun Belt, led by infielders Zach Leite (.418) and Maverick Stallings (.400). Power has been more limited, however, as the Monarchs' 13 home runs rank 11th in the league. On the mound, Old Dominion carries a 6.25 team ERA, which ranks 12th in the Sun Belt.

Catcher Jimmy Janicki entered the season without having caught a single inning in college, spending his freshman year at third base. But the sophomore has looked the part of a future pro since moving behind the plate. Janicki has emerged as one of college baseball's top defensive catchers, ranking 10th nationally in framing runs saved (3.44), the best mark in the Sun Belt.
Janicki has also taken a leap offensively. His four home runs through 16 games already double the two he hit in 54 games last season. He also leads Troy with a .344 batting average after hitting .280 as a freshman.

Friday starter Tommy Egan was named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List this week after a dominant start to his senior season. The Chicago native has anchored the Friday night role for Troy, posting a 2.25 ERA while working 5.0 innings in each of his first four starts. Egan has struck out 27 batters against just six walks over 20 innings, allowing only 14 hits and holding opponents to a .197 batting average.
Egan earned his second win of the season in his most recent start against Maryland last Friday. The righty tossed five innings without a run, striking out seven to just one walk in a 5-2 Trojan win over the Terrapins of the Big Ten. He recorded a career-high nine strikeouts two weeks prior, firing five shutout innings in a 13-3 win over Campbell.
Ben Ten
Lefty Benjamin Stubbs is coming off his two best starts of the season against Big Ten opponents Rutgers and Maryland. Against Rutgers, Stubbs cruised through the first seven innings, allowing only two base runners on a pair of singles in the third inning and putting them down 1-2-3 six times. Against Maryland, Stubbs pitched six innings of one-run ball, matching his season high of six strikeouts. The solo home run he allowed to Maryland's Ryan Costello was just the second extra-base hit he's allowed all season.

Troy and Old Dominion met on the field for the first time last season, with the Trojans taking the season series 3-2. Troy took 2-of-3 from the Monarchs on the road in April.
